Budget Build Fridays #8 – There’s no Business like Snow Business

Budget Build Fridays are geared around making affordable decks that are a good starting point for newer players, that you can build from bulk or are affordable. We aim to provide a deck every week with a wide range of playstyles that won’t break the bank.

This week we’re looking at an element that I’d been avoiding for a bit as people tend to have little positive to say about it, but with the recent Crystal Tower podcast covering the subject (check it out, Jordan Denk’s DGS Ice Deck heavily inspired this week’s build, and he’s a guest this week) I figured now was a time to look at a cheap version of Mono Ice Turbo Discard. The deck comes in at $25.15 according to FFdecks, and it’s full of cards that should be pretty easy to obtain. It’s also a great opportunity for a load of really cool puns, so take a seat, chill out, and check out the list below.

Budget Build Fridays #7 – Diablos Cadets

Budget Build Fridays are geared around making affordable decks that are a good starting point for newer players, that you can build from bulk or are affordable. We aim to provide a deck every week with a wide range of playstyles that won’t break the bank.

This weeks article didn’t initially start out as a budget build, this is a deck that I built for fun but ended up costing way less than I projected (a happy coincidence) and was really, really fun to play. It uses some of my favourite forwards (Cadets!) as well as some really annoying summons to get the most out of them.

In terms of playstyle, it’s a pretty simple deck with you basically trying to win combat as much as possible, but also trying to get some good activations of Machina‘s auto ability using some neat tricks the deck has.

This deck at time of writing comes in at $38.66 (manually calculated, FFDecks has the price lower, at $23.96, so you should find the deck builds for somewhere between those two prices), and for the price I think it’s a really fun deck. I’ve had a tonne of fun playing it and am probably going to keep it on as one of my decks.

Let’s take a look at the list! Continue reading “Budget Build Fridays #7 – Diablos Cadets”

Budget Build Fridays #6 – Dadaluma Gullwings

Budget Build Fridays are geared around making affordable decks that are a good starting point for newer players, that you can build from bulk or are affordable. We aim to provide a deck every week with a wide range of playstyles that won’t break the bank.

This week we’re having a look at something that’s a bit less off-meta than previous decks I’ve looked at, but is still modestly costed. For $47.32 (at time of writing), we’re having a look at Dadaluma Gullwings.

(Disclaimer: a large portion of the cost of this deck is the Dadalumas. If you already have these the build cost is significantly cheaper, or if you can pick them up below market price – eBay usually has them very cheap, this deck will come in well below the above price.)

Let’s have a look at the list!

Budget Build Fridays #5 – Dirt Cheap

Budget Build Fridays are geared around making affordable decks that are a good starting point for newer players, that you can build from bulk or are affordable. We aim to provide a deck every week with a wide range of playstyles that won’t break the bank.

This week we are having a look at a Mono Earth deck, it’s one I’ve been wanting to do for a while but couldn’t settle on WROs or… well. Not WROs. I settled on the latter. I think there’s something slightly wrong with how FFDecks is currently working out total prices for decks, as the deck at time of writing shows $28.73 as lowest price, but I calculated manually and it’s actually $18.15, which is much more on the nose for the budget builds I like to do. Let’s take a look!

Budget Build Fridays #4 – Manikin Mayhem

So, you’ve got playsets of the new participation promo Exdeath sat around doing nothing – let’s build something weird for under $15!

This deck will focus on the virtually abandoned Manikin archetype that was released in Opus II – with Dissidia NT having been out for a while, perhaps we’ll see an eventual resurgence in this archetype? For now, all the cards are dirt cheap, which makes it ideal for a budget build.

Budget Build Fridays #3 – Vermilion Fire

Budget Build Fridays are geared around making affordable decks that are a good starting point for newer players, that you can build from bulk or are affordable. We aim to provide a deck every week with a wide range of playstyles that won’t break the bank.

Hot on the heels of our Card of the Week, Vermilion Bird l’Cie Caetuna, we’re going to be taking a look at everyone’s favourite underdog deck, Mono Fire! According to FFdecks.com, this week’s brew is buildable for a mere $13.74, so hopefully this can help you try out Mono Fire without a large monetary commitment! Plus, if you’re in the UK and ‘enjoying’ the hot weather at the moment, Mono Fire must be an appropriate deck… right?

This week’s deck is based around high-powered attacking forwards and multiple pings for removal – you’ll find that you need to play around Flintlock & Minwu for the pinging aspect of the deck, but Caetuna helps out there and the fact that our forwards can be a potential +4k when attacking is huge!

Budget Build Fridays #2 – One-Cost Wonders

Budget Build Fridays are geared around making affordable decks that are a good starting point for newer players, that you can build from bulk or are affordable. We aim to provide a deck every week with a wide range of playstyles that won’t break the bank.

This week we’re having a look at a deck based around low-costed forwards, Shemhazai, the Whisperer & Spiceacilian (which I still maintain sounds like a pizza.) FFDecks has the cost of this deck for $10.09, and with the majority of the deck being Rares and Commons, hopefully it’s something you can build and try out!
